After many years' absence from the Chapel of the Royal Hospital School, Trianon makes a welcome return with a programme designed to exploit the unique sonic qualities of the famous building as well as of its great organ. The excitement of a Coronation anthem with its shouts welcoming the soon-to-be crowned monarch contrasts with the ethereal anthem for unaccompanied voices composed by Trianon's President, John Rutter, in 2000. The 50th anniversary of the death of one of this country's most significant composers, Ralph Vaughan Williams, is marked by one of his most famous compositions. It is fitting that music by this composer, who studied and served during the Great War in France, should precede two contrasting French works: Saint- Saens' Organ Symphony, and the setting of the Catholic Requiem by Maurice Durufle, for some as fine a work as the companion version by Faure.
