Monday January 7th ‘An Ambitious Programme’
For their Christmas holiday concert the Trianon Youth Orchestra, made up of
70 per cent school children with some adults to help out, presented a varied,
interesting and ambitious programme on Saturday night at the Art Gallery,
Ipswich. Their conductor is
Christopher Green, an undergraduate at Leeds University. He is also the director of the orchestra,
trains the members and is responsible for the interpretation of the
music. It is very rare to have someone
so young to be in complete charge of an orchestra. What the orchestra lack in experience they
make up for in keenness and willingness to tackle anything. They played some little known pieces, and
on the whole they were well handled, though the music could have been played
more crisply in most of the works. The
orchestra was strongest in the wind section, and Mozart’s ‘Minuet and Trio
from Serenade in B flat’ by the wind ensemble conducted by John Drake, the
assistant conductor was well done.
Their most ambitious work was the ‘Symphony in C’ by I.J.Pleyel, a
little-known composer, and though perhaps sometimes it lacked cohesion it was
a good attempt. Julian Mallett was the
soloist in the Flute Concerto in D (known as ‘The Goldfinch’) by A. Vivaldi,
and he handled the cadenzas imitating the bird’s song competently and with a
light touch. He was well backed by the
orchestra. Mollie Southgate,
accompanied by Miss O. Foster, gave some pleasing solos, though she was a
little uncertain on her higher notes.
Pupils from the Priory Heath Junior School, with their conductor, Mr.
H. N. James, gave a number of pieces on recorders and mouth organs. |

|
| The Mayor and Mayoress of Ipswich, Mr and Mrs
J.M.Stewart were amongst those who attended the Trianon Music Group’s summer
concert at the Co-op Hall. With a
guard of honour and fanfares by the Ipswich Sea Cadet Corps, two groups of
songs by the Ipswich Co-operative Girls’ Choir, and items by various sections
of the Trianon Music Group, as well as the full orchestra, it was an
enterprising ‘pageant of youth’. The
full orchestra led by David Lewis and conducted by Christopher Green, the
Trianon Music Group’s director, opened the programme with an overture by
Cimarosa, and also played Bizet’s ‘L’Arlesienne Suite’ No. 2, in the minuet
of which Julian Mallett’s solo flute was notably musical. In a ‘Concerto in F’, arranged from
movements by Handel, the orchestra accompanied the trumpet soloist, Graham
McKenny, who showed musical insight and understanding. Another piece included Gustav Holst’s
‘Brook Green’ suite - a most appropriate choice - as it was the anniversary
of his birthday on Saturday. The final
item of the orchestra, conducted by Christopher Green, was the ever-fresh
‘Folk Song suite’ by Vaughan Williams.
This was the best played item of the evening. The audience demanded an encore and the
orchestra gladly replied with an Slavonic Dance in G Minor by Dvorak. |
