The Royal Hospital School is a coeducational full boarding and day school for 650 11 to 18 year olds. The School has a long tradition of music largely emanating from its naval heritage. The 130-strong Chapel choir has this year sung at St Paul ’s Cathedral, St James’ Palace, St Martins in the Field and at the Festival of Remembrance held in the Royal Albert Hall. As well as playing regularly for the schools own ceremonial parades, the School Band has performed at The Royal Tournament at Earls Court , Lords Cricket Ground and Twickenham. Both have toured extensively, both in the UK and abroad, most recently to Sri Lanka , Paris , Venice and the USA .

On a day to day basis the whole school enjoys daily singing in the cathedral-proportioned Chapel and over 300 pupils play at least one instrument during their time at the Royal Hospital School. Music forms part of the junior curriculum and is offered as an academic subject at both GCSE and A Level. There are gala performances, musicals, lunchtime recitals and performances by small ensembles.

The School is now looking to the future with a £3.5milion music school housing a 200-seat recital hall, 18 practice and specialist rooms, a technical suite and “rock room”. The lobby of the music school will be a place to meet and gather on a day to day basis and during public performances.

Director of Music, Peter Crompton says “This outstanding new facility will give pupils the opportunity to try a whole range of instruments and to learn to appreciate music as part of their all round education. The school will also be able to further develop its links with the local community through musical performances and concerts on a regular basis – it is an exciting time for us”.
